An Overview

Establishment

• Established as Seed Unit Nagpur in December 1992 under World Bank Aided Maharashtra Forestry Project.
• Besides World Bank Aided Maharashtra Forestry Project, works have also been undertaken under Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the Development of Tree and Pasture Seeds and World Bank Aided FREE Project of the ICFRE through TFRI, Jabalpur.
  

Infrastructure

• Well equipped Laboratory to test the seeds
• Temperature controlled Germinating Rooms
• Two Cold Storage Units
• Seed Treatment Platforms
• All necessary equipments to test the seeds

Staff

• Managed by Trained and Qualified Staff headed by Divisional Manager

Seed Sources

• Seeds exclusively collected from four sources viz. Plus Trees, Seed Orchards, Seed Stands  & Seed Production Areas

Species covered

• 96 ha of Teak seed Orchards,
• 209.50 Ha of Seed Stands and
   1109.186 Ha of Seed Production Areas of Teak 

Seed Testing & Storage

• Seed is tested for its moisture content, purity, and germination percent in the temperature controlled germinating rooms in well-equipped laboratory in accordance with the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) Rules.
• Two cold storage units (5⁰ and 15⁰) for storing the seeds
  

Tree Improvement Works

• Seedling Seed Orchards –cum-Progeny Trials of Teak (Tectona grandis), Sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo), Khair (Acacia catechu), Sirus (Albizzia procera) have been taken up to begin with.
  

Seed Supplied during 2008-2009

• 22.514 MT of the teak seed supplied
• 2.122 MT of the bamboo and miscellaneous species seed supplied

• Marketing of Root-trainer Seedlings, Compost, Vermicompost, Potting mix started
• New Projects on Medicinal Plants
